Where Sammy lives and sweeps the temple floor
Now one hot summer day Sammy had finished sweeping and the snakes had gone back into their homey hole. Sammy was praying before the great statue of the Buddha. And a boy camedown to the jungle to visit the great cave where he heard some monks lived and there were bats and monkeys. This boy, you see, was looking to have an adventure. Sammy finished his prayers, greeted the boy ("Sa-wa-dee cob") and invited him to take his shoes off. Then Sammy, gracious host as he was to everyone, showed the boy around the great cave that was also a temple.
"And home to some very big snakes,"
Sammy told the boy. Sammy told him about the snake, and what happens when he cleans,
and that by sunlight the snake slithers back into that sunless cave. The boy's eyes grew bright and excited and he asked,
"How may I see the snake, Mr. Sammy the monk?" (and tell my friends of my adventure, the boy thought proudly to himself).
Sammy the monk said only this,
"Come back here at 4:00 O'clock in the morning and you will see."
